A medico-legal certificate (MLC) is a doctor's written report on a person's injuries or condition, prepared on a police or court request and used as evidence.

What does Medico-legal certificate mean in plain words?

After an injury, assault or rape, the police send the person to a doctor for examination; for rape and similar offences the Code requires examination by a registered medical practitioner immediately, a woman doctor for a female victim. The doctor writes a report on the injuries and condition. A medical witness's deposition taken before a magistrate can be used in evidence without calling him, though the court may summon him.
